Learn How Many Total Electoral Votes There Are

Figure out How Many Total Electoral Votes There Are In the United States, the president and VP are chosen by the Electoral College as opposed to the famous vote of the individuals and, as of April 2018, there are an aggregate of 538 appointive votes. This arrangement of aberrant majority rule government was picked by the Founding Fathersâ as a trade off between permitting Congress to choose a president and giving conceivably ignorant residents a direct vote.â The historical backdrop of how that number of appointive votes became and the number expected to choose a president is a fascinating story. Appointive Votes Background Previous U.S. Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamiltonâ wrote in Federalist (Paper) No. 68: Nothing was more to be wanted than that each practicable deterrent ought to be against scheme, interest, and corruption. The Federalist Papers, wrote by Hamilton, James Madison, and John Jay, spoke to an endeavor to persuade theâ states to endorse the Constitution. The designers of the Constitution, and numerous in authority positions during the 1780s, dreaded the impact of theâ unwashedâ mob. They expected that, whenever permitted to legitimately choose the president, the general masses may stupidly decide in favor of an inadequate president or even a tyrant or theâ masses may be undulyâ influenced by remote governmentsâ when deciding in favor of a president. Fundamentally, the Founding Fathers felt the majority couldn't be trusted. Consequently, they made the Electoral College, where residents of each state would decide in favor of a record of voters, who hypothetically were promised to then decide in favor of a particular up-and-comer. In any case, if conditions justified, the voters could be allowed to decide in favor of a competitor other than the one to whom they were promised. The Electoral College Today Today, every resident vote demonstrates which voters he might want to have representâ him during the Electoral College process. Each presidential ticket has a gathering of assigned voters prepared to react should their gathering win the famous vote of the individuals during a presidential political decision, which happens at regular intervals in November. The quantity of appointive votes is determined by including the quantity of legislators (100), the quantity of individuals in the House of Representatives (435), and three extra decisions in favor of the District of Columbia. (The District of Columbia was granted three discretionary votes with the entry of the 23rd Amendment in 1961.) The all out number of voters, at that point, signifies 538 all out votes. To win the administration, an up-and-comer needs in excess of 50 percent of the discretionary votes. Half of 538 is 269. In this way, an applicant needs 270 Electoral College votes to win. Progressively About the Electoral College The absolute number of appointive votes doesn't shift from year to year on the grounds that the quantity of individuals from the House of Representatives and the Senate doesn't change. Rather, every 10â years with the new enumeration, the quantity of voters shifts from states that have lost populace to states that have picked up populace. Despite the fact that the quantity of appointive votes is fixed at 538, there are conditions that can emerge requiring extraordinary consideration. There is an established procedure that becomes effective if there should be an occurrence of aâ tie in the Electoral College. Most states utilize a champ takes-all technique, where the up-and-comer who wins the states famous vote is granted the states whole record of voters. As of April 2018, Maine and Nebraska are the main expresses that don't utilize a victor takes-all system.Because of the manner in which voters are distributed, the presidential up-and-comer with the most votes by the populace doesn't generally win the political decision and become president. This was the situation with Hillary Clinton, whoâ won the well known vote by almost 3 million ballotsâ in the 2016 presidential political decision, but Donald Trumpâ became president on the grounds that heâ received 290 out of 538 discretionary votes, 20 more than the 270 appointive votes he expected to win.

Introduction Personal observation of the success or failure of different leadership approaches in a variety of situations can be an effective leadership technique. From these observations, a leader can improve their understanding of how to implement the right approach in the right situation. Indigenous Philosophical Ecology System - Free Samples to Students

Question: Discuss about the Indigenous Philosophical Ecology System. Answer: Introduction: Each individual world over has a worldview which offers them a sense of ordered reality and makes it possible for them to make sense of the world as well as their actions. By enabling individuals to interpret what they observe in the world through a mental framework, the worldview it gives them a sense of security and some level of predictability and certainty. The dreaming is the worldview for indigenous Australian cultures which enabled them to understand and interpret the world as well as enabling them to understand their place in the world as human beings (Bourke, Bourke Edwards, 1998). The dreaming is a terminology used by the Aboriginals in describing the balances between moral, natural and spiritual elements of the world. Although it is an English word its meaning surpasses any spiritual or dream-related state (Stanner, 2011) Dreaming dates back to the period of the origin of the universe to the period before living experience or memory. Dreaming is also called dream time or world dawn. This worldview performs three major functions in Indigenous cultures: The dreaming provides individuals with a set of laws and rules for living. These rules apply to social relationships and all activities including social ceremonies religious activities and economic activities. The dreaming also provides an outline for life and the creation of all living forms and finally explains how the universe and everything in it was created or came into existence(Stanner, 2011). It, for example, enables the koorie and Murri language groups to have an understanding of the origin of the universe and enable them to interpret what they observe in the universe and make sense of their actions besides enabling them to understand their role in the universe (Bourke, Bourke Edwards, 1998). The linkage between Kinship, the dreaming, and economic organization is that while the dreaming is concerned with humans as universal beings and enables them to have an understanding of their universe and their place in it, kinship deals with individuals within their societies and helps them to understand their societies and individual roles role in their societies. The Economic organization presents individuals with income generating opportunities to enable them to carry out their roles and obligations and enable enabling them to survive within the universe and their language groups. Different bonds bind different people in various societies. Kinship refers to the marriage or blood bond that binds people together. Kinship is a universal concept found in many societies, and it plays a significant role in those societies. It can, therefore, be through blood or marriage. There are various bases of kinship including sex which is focused on sex of blood relationships such as that of a brother and sister, kinship based on blood relationships such as those for linear and collateral relatives, Divisions such as mothers mother and fathers father and those based on close relationships or intimacy such as a husband and father in law (Rose, 2005). Functions of Kinship There are numerous roles played by Kinship in Indigenous Australia, including governing the role relationships among kins and organizing economic and social relationships. This is achieved through kinship rules. Kinship also plays a role in determining the rights and obligations of the members of Indigenous Australian Societies. It helps individuals to understand their position in their language group in relation to individuals outside their language group (Kwaymullina,2005). For example, a member of the palawa language group can understand where he or she stands about members of the Nunga group. Trough this; kinship promotes harmonious relationships among members of the same language group or different language groups within Indigenous Australia. Kinship also provided members of Indigenous Australia with a sense of identity and belonging. The strong kinship bonds also provide a sense of security to the members of various language groups (Rose, 2005). Indigenous Australian Cultures are the oldest in the world dating to over 50000 years ago. The cultural heritage of these groups has been kept alive over the years through the protection of cultural materials and a passing of cultural knowledge across generations. Indigenous Australia is used to refer to the Torres Strait Islander and the Aboriginal people of Australia. Although there are similarities between these indigenous Australian groups, there are also numerous differences in their culture, language, and customs which are characteristic of the various indigenous language groups (Colson, 2013). While kinship gives a sense of belonging and identity to individuals, the dreaming presents them with an opportunity to understand how they came into being together with the universe in which they live. The Economic organization enables them to meet their obligations within their language groups. Economic Organization Economic Organization refers to a set of actions controlling the factors of production. It involves the ownership and right to makes decisions of the factor of production (Altman, 2000). Economic organization can also be defined as the system that a society devises to meet material needs. These factors of production include land, capital and labour. The following section will explore the role and function of the economic organization to indigenous Australian life with examples. It will also refer to diverse economic organization of the indigenous Australians. The indigenous Australians economic organization was subsistence. The aboriginals mostly worked to settle their subsistence needs. There were three main economic activities that indigenous Australian was engaged to; first, they practiced hunting and gathering. The aboriginals men hunted animals while women gathered plant food and shellfish for food. The hunting and gathering was done within the area that the community occupied (Peterson, 2005). Secondly, the indigenous Australians were involved in fishing. Some of the aboriginals in Australia had camps along the coast lines and rivers in order to practice fishing. The Aboriginal men fished with spears while women fished with hook and lines. The Indigenous Australians extensively depended on marine resources for subsistence. Another main economic activity for indigenous Australian was exchange. Aboriginal men and women exchanged fish and crayfish for sugar and tea. The dependence to subsistence economy led to indigenous Australian to have low standards of living. After pre-colonial period in 18th Century, the Aboriginals were involved in other economic activities such as agriculture and manufacturing as labourers (Altman, 1987). An example of economic of organization for indigenous Australian was Yuin tribe where the father pointed out the child the land that the child could hunt, fish and have power of it. This meant that the child would grow assuming all the rights of the land and making decisions on the output of the land (Bennett, 2007). The diversity among the indigenous Australian in terms of economic organization was evident. Indigenous people who camped in the coastal areas mainly engaged in fishing while those in dry land practiced hunting and gathering. In summary, economic organization can be easily linked to Kinship, The Dream and the culture. The culture determined how factors of production were distributed and was common to people in the same kinship. This influenced the social interaction and thinking among the indigenous Australians. A natural disaster is the effect of a natural hazard (e. g. flood, tornado, hurricane, volcanic eruption, earthquake, or landslide) that affects the environment, and leads to financial, environmental and/or human losses. The resulting loss depends on the capacity of the population to support or resist the disaster, and their resilience. [1] This understanding is concentrated in the formulation: disasters occur when hazards meet vulnerability. [2] A natural hazard will hence never result in a natural disaster i n areas without vulnerability, e. g. strong earthquakes in uninhabited areas. The term natural has consequently been disputed because the events simply are not hazards or disasters without human involvement. [3] Natural disasters which occur the movement of plate tectonics are earthquakes, volcanoes, geyser eruptions and tsunami. movement disasters [edit]Avalanches Avalanche on the backside (East) of Mt. Timpanogos, Utah at Aspen Grove trail Notable avalanches include: The 1910 Wellington avalanche The 1954 Blons avalanches The 1999 Galtur Avalanche The 2002 Kolka-Karmadon rock ice slide The 2010 Pacaya Volcano ash disaster [edit]Earthquakes Main article: Earthquake An Earthquake is a sudden shake of the Earths crust caused by the tectonic plates colliding. The vibrations may vary in magnitude. The underground point of origin of the earthquake is called the focus. The point directly above the focus on the surface is called theepicenter. Earthquakes by themselves rarely kill people or wildlife. It is usually the secondary events that they trigger, such as building collapse, fires, tsunamis (seismic sea waves) and volcanoes, that are actually the human disaster. Many of these could possibly be avoided by better construction, safety systems, early warning and evacuation planning. [edit]Lahars A lahar is a volcanic mudflow or landslide. The 1953 Tangiwai disaster was caused by a lahar, as was the 1985 Armero tragedy in which the town of Armero was buried and an estimated 23,000 people were killed. [edit]Volcanic eruptions Main article: Types of volcanic eruptions See also: Worlds largest eruptions Puu Oo An Eruption may in itself be a disaster due to the explosion of the volcano or the fall of rock but there are several effects that may happen after an eruption that are also hazardous to human life. Lava may be produced during the eruption of a volcano a material consisting of superheated rock. There are several different forms which may be either crumbly or gluey. Leaving the volcano this destroys any buildings and plants it encounters. Volcanic ash generally meaning the cooled ash may form a cloud, and settle thickly in nearby locations. When mixed with water this forms a concrete like material. In sufficient quantity ash may cause roofs to collapse under its weight but even small quantities will cause ill health if inhaled. Since the ash has the consistency of ground glass it causes abrasion damage to moving parts such as engines. Supervolcanoes : According to the Toba catastrophe theory 70 to 75 thousand years ago a super volcanic event at Lake Toba reduced the human population to 10,000 or even 1,000 breeding pairs creating a bottleneck in human evolution. It also killed three quarters of all plant life in the northern hemisphere. The main danger from a supervolcano is the immense cloud of ash which has a disastrous global effect on climate and temperature for many years. Pyroclastic flows consist of a cloud of hot volcanic ash which builds up in the air above under its own weight and streams very rapidly from the mountain burning anything in its path. It is believed that Pompeii was destroyed by a pyroclastic flow. [edit]Water disasters [edit]Floods Main article: List of floods The Limpopo River, in southern Mozambique, during the 2000 Mozambique flood Some of the most notable floods include: The 2010 Pakistan floods, damaged crops and the infrastructure, while claiming many lives. The Huang He (Yellow River) in China floods particularly often. The Great Flood of 1931 caused between 800,000 and 4,000,000 deaths. The Great Flood of 1993 was one of the most costly floods in United States history. The 1998 Yangtze River Floods, also in China, left 14 million people homeless. The 2000 Mozambique flood covered much of the country for three weeks, resulting in thousands of deaths, and leaving the country devastated for years afterward. Tropical cyclones can result in extensive flooding and storm surge, as happened with: Bhola Cyclone, striking East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) in 1970, Typhoon Nina, striking China in 1975, Tropical Storm Allison, which struck Houston, Texas in 2001 and Hurricane Katrina, which left most of New Orleans under water in 2005. Much of the flooding was due to the failure of the citys levee system. [edit]Limnic eruptions A cow suffocated by gases from Lake Nyos after a limnic eruption A limnic eruption occurs when a gas, usually CO2 suddenly erupts from deep lake water, posing the threat of suffocating wildlife, livestock and humans. Such an eruption may also cause tsunamis in the lake as the rising gas displaces water. Scientists believe landslides, volcanic activity, or explosions can trigger such an eruption. To date, only two limnic eruptions have been observed and recorded: In 1984, in Cameroon, a limnic eruption in Lake Monoun caused the deaths of 37 nearby residents. At nearby Lake Nyos in 1986 a much larger eruption killed between 1,700 and 1,800 people by asphyxiation. [edit]Tsunami The tsunami caused by the December 26, 2004, earthquake strikes Ao Nang, Thailand. Tsunamis can be caused by undersea earthquakes as the one caused in Ao Nang, Thailand, by the 2004 Indian Ocean Earthquake, or by landslides such as the one which occurred at Lituya Bay, Alaska. Ao Nang, Thailand (2004). The 2004 Indian Ocean Earthquake created the Boxing Day Tsunami and disaster at this site. Lituya Bay, Alaska (1953). A mega-tsunami occurred here, the largest ever recorded. (This also fits within the Land movement disaster category because it started with an earthquake. ) See also 2010 Chile earthquake on October 26, 2010, a tsunami occurred at Sumatra, Indonesia [edit]Weather disasters Main article: Meteorological disasters Young steer after a blizzard, March 1966 [edit]Blizzards Significant blizzards in the United States include: The Great Blizzard of 1888 The Schoolhouse Blizzard earlier the same year The Armistice Day Blizzard in 1940 The Storm of the Century in 1993 [edit]Cyclonic storms Main articles: Tropical cyclone and Cyclone Cyclone, tropical cyclone, hurricane, and typhoon are different names for the same phenomenon a cyclonic storm system that forms over the oceans. The deadliest hurricane ever was the 1970 Bhola cyclone; the deadliest Atlantic hurricane was the Great Hurricane of 1780 which devastated Martinique, St. Eustatius and Barbados. Another notable hurricane is Hurricane Katrina which devastated the Gulf Coast of the United States in 2005. [edit]Droughts Well-known historical droughts include: 1900 India killing between 250,000 and 3. 25 million. 1921-22 Soviet Union in which over 5 million perished from starvation due to drought 1928-30 northwest China resulting in over 3 million deaths by famine. 1936 and 1941 Sichuan Province China resulting in 5 million and 2. 5 million deaths respectively. As of 2006, states of Australia including Western Australia, New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland had been under drought conditions for five to ten years. The drought is beginning to affect urban area populations for the first time. In 2006, Sichuan Province China experienced its worst drought in modern times with nearly 8 million people and over 7 million cattle facing water shortages. [edit]Hailstorms Hailstorms (AKA hailstones) are rain drops that have formed together into ice. A particularly damaging hailstorm hit Munich, Germany, on July 12, 1984, causing about 2 billion dollars in insurance claims. [edit]Heat waves The worst heat wave in recent history was the European Heat Wave of 2003. Hurricane Katrina A summer heat wave in Victoria, Australia, caused the massive bushfires in 2009. Melbourne experienced three days in a row of temperatures exceeding 40Â °C. The bushfire, otherwise known as Black Saturday was also started intentionally. [edit]Tornadoes Main article: Tornado Different Types of Tornadoes: Supercell Tornadoes Main article: Supercell Some of the most violent tornadoes develop from supercell thunderstorms. A supercell thunderstorm is a long-lived thunderstorm possessing within its structure a continuously rotating updraft of air. These storms have the greatest tendency to produce tornadoes, some of the huge wedge shape. The supercell thunderstorm has a low-hanging, rotating layer of cloud known as a wall cloud. It looks somewhat like a layer of a layer cake that hangs below the broader cloud base. One side of the wall cloud is often rain-free, while the other is neighbored by dense shafts of rain. The rotating updraft of the supercell is seen on radar as a mesocyclone. The tornadoes that accompany supercell thunderstorms are more likely to remain in contact with the ground for long periods of time—an hour or more—than other tornadoes, and are more likely to be violent, with winds exceeding-200 mph. Landspout Main article: Landspout Generally weaker than a supercell tornado, a landspout is not associated with a wall cloud or mesocyclone. It may be observed beneath cumulonimbus or towering cumulus clouds and is the land equivalent of a waterspout. It often forms along the leading edge of rain-cooled downdraft air emanating from a thunderstorm, known as a gust front. Gustnado Main article: Gustnado Weak and usually short-lived, a gustnado forms along the gust front of a thunderstorm, appearing as a temporary dust whirl or debris cloud. There may be no apparent connection to or circulation in the cloud aloft. These appear like dust devils. Waterspout A waterspout is a tornado over water. A few form from supercell thunderstorms, but many form from weak thunderstorms or rapidly growing cumulus clouds. Waterspouts are usually less intense and causes far less damage. Rarely more than fifty yards wide, it forms over warm tropical ocean waters, although its funnel is made of freshwater droplets condensed from water vapor from condensation not saltwater from the ocean. Waterspouts usually dissipate upon reaching land. The following are tornado-like circulations Dust Devils Main article: Dust devil Dry, hot, clear days on the desert or over dry land can bring about dust devils. Generally forming in the hot sun during the late morning or early afternoon hours, these mostly harmless whirlwinds are triggered by light desert breezes that create a swirling plume of dust with speeds rarely over 70 mph. These differ from tornadoes in that they are not associated with a thunderstorm (or any cloud), and are usually weaker than the weakest tornado. Typically, the life cycle of a dust devil is a few minutes or less, although they can last much longer. Although usually harmless, they have been known to cause minor damage. They can blow vehicles off the road and could damage your eyes by blowing dust into them. Firewhirls Main article: Fire whirl Sometimes the intense heat created by a major forest fire or volcanic eruption can create what is known as a firewhirl, a tornado-like rotating column of smoke and/or fire. This happens when the fire updraft concentrates some initial weak whirl or eddy in the wind. Winds associated with firewhirls have been estimated at over 100 mph. They are sometimes called fire tornadoes, fire devils, or even firenadoes. 4] [edit]Fire Main article: List of forest fires Wildfires are an uncontrolled fire burning in wildland areas. Common causes include lightning and drought but wildfires may also be started by human negligence or arson. They can be a threat to those in rural areas and also wildlife. Notable cases of wildfires were the 1871 Peshtigo Fire in the United States, which killed at least 1700 peo ple, and the 2009 Victorian bushfires in Australia. [edit]Health and diseases [edit]Epidemic Main article: List of epidemics The A H5N1 virus, which causes Avian influenza An epidemic is an outbreak of a contractible disease that spreads at a rapid rate through a human population. A pandemic is an epidemic whose spread is global. There have been many epidemics throughout history, such as Black Death. In the last hundred years, significant pandemics include: The 1918 Spanish flu pandemic, killing an estimated 50 million people worldwide The 1957-58 Asian flu pandemic, which killed an estimated 1 million people The 1968-69 Hong Kong flu pandemic The 2002-3 SARS pandemic The AIDS epidemic, beginning in 1959 The H1N1 Influenza (Swine Flu) Pandemic 2009-2010 Other diseases that spread more slowly, but are still considered to be global health emergencies by the WHO include: XDR TB, a strain of tuberculosis that is extensively resistant to drug treatments Malaria, which kills an estimated 1. 6 million people each year Ebola hemorrhagic fever, which has claimed hundreds of victims in Africa in several outbreaks [edit]Famine Main article: List of famines In modern times, famine has hit Sub-Saharan Africa the hardest, although the number of victims of modern famines is much smaller than the number of people killed by the Asian famines of the 20th century. edit]Space Fallen trees caused by the Tunguska meteoroid of the Tunguska event in June 1908. [edit]Gamma ray bursts Main article: gamma ray burst Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are flashes of gamma rays associated with extremely energetic explosions in distant galaxies. They are the most luminous electromagnetic events known to occur in the universe. Bursts can last from milliseconds to several min utes, although a typical burst lasts a few seconds. The initial burst is usually followed by a longer-lived afterglow emitted at longer wavelengths (X-ray, ultraviolet, optical, infrared and radio). Most observed GRBs are believed to be a narrow beam of intense radiation released during a supernova event, as a rapidly rotating, high-mass star collapses to form a black hole. A subclass of GRBs (the short bursts) appear to originate from a different process, possibly the merger of binary neutron stars. The sources of most GRBs are billions of light years away from Earth, implying that the explosions are both extremely energetic (a typical burst releases as much energy in a few seconds as the Sun will in its entire 10 billion year lifetime) and extremely rare (a few per galaxy per million years[1]). All observed GRBs have originated from outside the Milky Way galaxy, although a related class of phenomena, soft gamma repeater flares, are associated with magnetars within the Milky Way. It has been hypothesized that a gamma-ray burst in the Milky Way could cause a mass extinction on Earth. [2] GRBs were first detected in 1967 by the Vela satellites, a series of satellites designed to detect covert nuclear weapons tests. Hundreds of theoretical models were proposed to explain these bursts in the years following their discovery, such as collisions between comets and neutron stars. 3] Little information was available to verify these models until the 1997 detection of the first X-ray and optical afterglows and direct measurement of their redshifts using optical spectroscopy. These discoveries, and subsequent studies of the galaxies and supernovae associated with the bursts, clarified the distance and luminosity of GRBs, definitively placing them in distant galaxies and connecting long GRBs with the deaths of massive stars. [edit]Impact events Main article: impact event One of the largest impact events in modern times was the Tunguska event in June 1908. edit]Solar flares Main article: solar flare A solar flare is a phenomenon where the sun suddenly releases a great amount of solar radiation, much more than normal. Some known solar flares include: An X20 event on August 16, 1989 A similar flare on April 2, 2001 The most powerful flare ever recorded, on November 4, 2003, estimated at between X40 and X45 The most powerful flare in the past 500 years is believed to have occurred in September 1859 [edit]Supernovae and hypernovae Main articles: supernova and hypernova [edit]Future of natural disasters The United Kingdom based charity Oxfam publicly stated that the number of people hit by climate-related disasters is expected to rise by about 50%, to reach 375 million a year by 2015. [5] British defence secretary Liam Fox has pubilicly warned that a massive solar flare may occur in 2013, causing widespread damage to the worlds electronic and communications infrastructures. [6] [edit]Insurance Natural disasters play a major role in the insurance industry, which pays for certain damages arising from hurricanes, wildfires, and other catastrophes. Large reinsurance companies are particularly involved. [7]

Reasons to Be Pretty, a Play by Neil LaBute

Reasons to Be Pretty, a Play by Neil LaBute Reasons to Be Pretty is a hard-edged comedy written by Neil LaBute. It is the third and final installment of a trilogy (The Shape of Things, Fat Pig, and Reasons to Be Pretty). The trio of plays are connected not by characters or plot but by the recurring theme of body image within American society. Reasons to Be Pretty premiered on Broadway in 2008. It was nominated for three Tony Awards (Best Play, Best Leading Actress, and Best Leading Actor). Meet the Characters Steph is the central argument of the play. Throughout the story, she is furious. She feels emotionally wounded by her boyfriend- who believes that her face is regular (which she views as a way of saying that she is not beautiful). Greg, the protagonist, spends most of his life trying to explain his misunderstood intentions to others. Like other leading men in Neil LaBute plays, he is far more affable than the male supporting characters (who are always foul-mouthed jerks). In spite of his low-key, eager-to-remain-calm personality, Greg somehow evokes anger from the rest of the characters. Kent is the obnoxious jerk character we were just talking about. He is crude, down-to-earth, and believes that his life is better than perfect. He not only has a good-looking wife, but hes also tangled in a work-related affair. Carly is the wife of Kent and the best friend of Stephanie. She sets the conflict in motion, spreading gossip about Gregs supposedly true feelings. Reasons to Be Pretty Plot Summary of Act One Scene One In Scene One, Steph is very angry because her boyfriend Greg supposedly said something derogatory about her physical appearance. After a heated argument, Greg explains he and his friend Kent had a conversation in Kents garage. Kent had mentioned that the newly hired woman at their workplace was hot. According to Greg, he replied: Maybe Steph hasnt got a face like that girls. Maybe Stephs face is just regular. But I wouldnt trade her for a million bucks. After his admission, Steph storms out of the room. Scene Two Greg hangs out with Kent, recounting his fight with Stephanie. During their conversation, Kent chastises him about eating an energy bar directly after a meal, claiming that Greg will get fat. Kent goes into the bathroom. Kents wife Carly arrives. Carly is in law enforcement. She is the one who gossiped to Steph about Gregs conversation, regarding her regular face. Carly harshly criticizes Greg, detailing how upset Steph has become, reacting to his insensitive words. Greg argues that he was trying to say something complimentary about Steph. Carly states that his communication skills suck. When Kent finally returns from the bathroom, he defuses the argument, kisses Carly, and advises Greg to treat women nicely to keep the relationship happy. Ironically, whenever Carly is not around, Kent is far more demeaning and derogatory than Greg. Scene Three Steph meets Greg in neutral territory: a restaurant at lunchtime. He has brought her flowers, but she remains intent on moving out and ending their four-year relationship. She wants to be with someone who sees her as beautiful. After unleashing more of her anger and rebuking Gregs attempts at reconciliation, Steph demands the keys so she can remove all of her items from their home. Greg finally fights back (verbally) and says that he doesnt want to see her stupid face anymore. That makes Stephanie snap! Steph makes him sit back down at the table. She then pulls out a letter from her purse. She has written down everything about Greg that she dislikes. Her letter is a vicious (yet amusing) tirade, detailing all of his physical and sexual flaws, from head to toe. After reading the hateful letter, she admits that she wrote all of those things to hurt him. However, she says that his comment about her face represents his true beliefs, and can therefore never be forgotten or taken back. Scene Four Kent and Carly sit together, complaining about work and money. Carly criticizes her husbands lack of maturity. Just as they start to makeup, Greg arrives to hang out and read a book. Carly leaves, annoyed because she blames Greg for making Steph move away. Kent reluctantly confides in Greg, admitting that he is having an affair with the hot girl at work. He goes through a long list of positive details about her physique. (In many ways it is the opposite of Stephs angry letter monologue.) At the end of the scene, Kent makes Greg promise not to reveal the affair to anyone (especially Steph or Carly). Kent claims that men must stick together because they are like buffalo. Act One of Reasons to Be Pretty concludes with Gregs realization that his relationship is not the only one that has fallen apart.

Was D-day a turning point for America during WW2 Research Paper

Was D-day a turning point for America during WW2 - Research Paper Example This restructured the view of total war where every citizen became a victim of the war. Such ultimatums obliged the citizens to take utmost responsibility in defending their city (Brasch, 35). The events that followed shaped the year 1944 into a combatant year, with every nation asserting pressure to the field of war. The war lasted between four and three years, in the process subjecting the citizens to travel restrictions, slavery in factories or fields, air defense blackouts and ceaseless rationing. The wars impact on the budgetary allocation of the European countries ate up two thirds of the national product (Simpson, 27). Soviet Union and the Nazi Germany had mobilized approximately 46 million men and women between them in the armed war. These conditions prompted a stop in the trends, as the populations fast depreciated (Eisenhower, 24). The total war, for instance included the massive participation of women. Women constituted 35% of the American and British workforce, and up to 50% in the USSR and Nazi Germany. The American population was lucky enough to escape these restrictions, because of the geographical immunity (Brown and Andrew, 32). The war affected the economic balance of America, as the economy strained to afford the high technology expensive armaments, hence straining to maintain a reasonable living standard for the population. The first six months of 1944 were slow to ambushes on the Axis, as forces slowly move towards Europe’s West (Weintraub, 12) with the aim of finishing the European allies of Nazi Germany. The preparations included invasion of France, at the same time prolonged wars continued against other allied forces. The Italian siege was tough as the German resurgence stuck high in mountains to provide strong resistance against confronting forces (Brasch, 22). The assault continued until Polish assault broke the German line to

A Farewell to Arms Summary and Critical Analysis Essay Example for Free

A Farewell to Arms Summary and Critical Analysis Essay Ernest Hemingway was born on July 21, 1899, in suburban Oak Park, IL, to Dr. Clarence and Grace Hemingway. Ernest was the second of six children to be raised in the quiet suburban town. His father was a physician, and both parents were devout Christians. Hemingway had an aptitude for physical challenge that engaged him through high school, where he both played football and boxed. Because of permanent eye damage contracted from numerous boxing matches, Hemingway was repeatedly rejected from service in World War I. Hemingway also edited his high school newspaper and reported for the Kansas City Star, adding a year to his age after graduating from high school in 1917. After this short stint, Hemingway finally was able to participate in World War I as an ambulance driver for the American Red Cross. He was wounded on July 8, 1918, on the Italian front near Fossalta di Piave. During his convalescence in Milan, he had an affair with a nurse, Agnes von Kurowsky. Hemingway received two decorations from the Italian government, and he joined the Italian infantry. Clarence Hemingway had been suffering from hypertension and diabetes. This painful experience is reflected in the pondering of Robert Jordan in For Whom the Bell Tolls. In addition to personal experiences with war and death, Hemingways extensive travel in pursuit of hunting and other sports provided a great deal of material for his novels. Bullfighting inspired Death in the Afternoon, published in 1932. In 1934, Hemingway went on safari in Africa, which gave him new themes and scenes on which to base The Snows of Kilamanjaro and The Green Hills of Africa, published in 1935. In 1950 he published Across the River and Into the Trees, though it was not received with the usual critical acclaim. In 1952, however, Hemingway proved the comment Papa is finished wrong, in that The Old Man and the Sea won the Pulitzer Prize in 1953. In 1954, he won the Nobel Prize for Literature. On July 2, 1961, he died of self-inflicted gunshot wounds. He was buried in Ketchum. Papa was both a legendary celebrity and a sensitive writer, and his influence, as well as some unseen writings, survived his passing. In 1964, A Moveable Feast was published; in 1969, The Fifth Column and Four Stories of the Spanish Civil War; in 1970, Islands in the Stream; in 1972, The Nick Adams Stories; in 1985, The Dangerous Summer; and in 1986, The Garden of Eden. Hemingways own life and character are as fascinating as in any of his stories. On one level, Papa was a legendary adventurer who enjoyed his flamboyant lifestyle and celebrity status. However, deep inside lived a disciplined author who worked tirelessly in pursuit of literary perfection. Being married before or after doesn’t effect the child physically or delays its birth. Marriage in this sense is the outward form of their love. Marriage in the physical sense before or after the fact means nothing as with Catherine’s early comment of â€Å"I couldn’t be any more married. † Henry and Catherine surely learned that they were in love no matter married or not. Having a ring on the finger doesn’t make the love any stronger it just a psychical representation of their love. Henry ignores the temptations of the outward forms of religion, love, and symbols as he achieves becoming authentic. The conclusion of â€Å"A Farewell To Arms† with all its death is marked by a rebirth. Henry looses his child and his lover. He finally achieves the status of being authentic in the final scene â€Å"It was like saying good-by to a statue. After a while I went out and left the hospital and walked back to the hotel in the rain. † Henry prior to Catherine death was seeking hope. During Catherine’s final hour Henry prayed to God once more only to go unanswered: Please, please, please, dear God, don’t let her die. Dear God, don’t let her die. Please, please, please, don’t let her die. God please don’t make her die. I’ll do anything you say if you don’t let her die. You took the baby but don’t let her die. That was all right but don’t let her die. Please, please, dear God, don’t let her die. He now knows all the things around him are false. Henry now knows the true forms of religion, patriotism, and love are empty forms of hope. He know knows that any hope must only come from within. Henry is now an authentic in that â€Å"He walks quietly back to the hotel in the rain. † and knows that only he can shape his destiny.

Depression and Body Image Essay -- Psychology Health Essays

Depression and Body Image American society places a tremendous emphasis on physical appearance. Many adolescent girls go to great lengths to achieve these unrealistic standards of thinness. Eating disorders have become a prevalent disease in Western society. Dissatisfaction with one’s physical appearance is viewed as a core feature of eating disorders. A negative body image is also a common feature associated with depression. There appears to be a link, although unclear, between depression and a poor body image. Adolescence is a tumultuous period in one’s life. Bodies of adolescents are dramatically changing, and these physical changes are associated with changes in body image. Body image pertains to how individuals view and assign meaning to their own bodies. It is a reflection of body structure and function, early and continuing body related experience, life long social response to body appearance, and sociocultural values and ideals regarding the body (Reirdan, 1997). Adolescence: A Period of Dramatic Change A normative developmental task for both girls and boys is to assimilate pubertal change into a positively valued body image. This task is more difficult for girls than for boys; girls are more concerned about attractiveness than boys, and they are less satisfied with their appearance (Rierdan, 1989). In a list of body areas, girls were more concerned that their thighs, buttocks and hips were too large. Even normal to thin girls were highly likely to desire smaller thighs, buttocks or hips. It is interesting to note that younger girls, aged 10-12 years, were less likely to select areas of sexual attractiveness, but tended to be dissatisfied with areas such as teeth, face, and feet (Moore, 1993). Burberry Strategy Essay

INTRODUCTION It is important for every business to clearly understand how resources and capabilities affect firm performance. As Grant (2005) defined, resources are the productive assets owned by the firm and capabilities are what the firm can do. In fact, companies that have sustainable competitive advances have been developed and exploited based on their internal resources and capabilities. Furthermore, they have successfully exploited external environment. In this essay, I will explore the topic area of ‘Resources & Capabilities’ with regards to a UK’s fashion group; the prominent designer label, Burberry GRP. In particular, the research will focus on the Strategic Business Unit of Burberry; understanding and explaining how they utilize the resources and competencies to achieve a competitive advantage. In order to do this, this paper will address on theory based from work in the areas of the ‘Resource-Based View’ and ‘Resources and Capabilities’ as well as using theoretical frameworks to give a holistic view of the strategic issues Burberry. After their reform, Burberry recovered rapidly, after the crisis of September, 2008. With 500 stores in over 50 countries, total revenues grew from 27% to  £1,501 million which is more than double its nearest rival, Chanel (with total revenues of  £ 651, 3). Retails revenues reached  £ 962 million and wholesale achieved  £ 441 million (Burberry’s a and Chanel financial report, 2012). As a result, Burberry has substantial surplus resources and is therefore able to withstand and compete in the hypercompetitive fashion market sector. Thus, Burberry achieved brand value up to more than  £ 2, 5 billion in 2012. Gucci, Prada and Chanel gained approximately of  £ 5.8,  £ 4.95, and  £ 4.2 billion respect ively. BODY The Resource-Based View In 1990s, the role of resources and capabilities become known as the basic for firms strategy and the primary source of profitability coalesced has become the resource-based view. Resources and capabilities are an important component of strategy to archive the competitive advantage. According to the  resource based view (RBV), assets and capabilities create value for the firm that leads to a sustainable competitive advantage (Hall, 1993). Burberry, Chanel and Gucci all compete in the same environment, yet Burberry is superior in performance. A Resource-Based View argues that Burberry is distinguished not by the environment, but by their internal resources. Peteraf (1993) adds to this view by arguing resources have to be heterogeneous and not perfectly mobile in order to transform a short run competitive advantage into sustained competitive advantage. Based on Grant’s model, through VRIN frame work, this research will now find out how Burberry use their resources to initiate their organizational capabilities and competences and ultimately achieve their strategic Capability. As displayed in Grant’s model showed above, in order to maintain operations, companies must have tangible, intangible, and human resource. â€Å"Tangible resources are known to be the easiest way to identify and evaluate† (Grant, 2005), however, this author assert that intangible resources contribute to total asset value much more tangible. Also, Hall (1992) mentions, intangible assets like the â€Å"feedstock† of capabilities are essential for a sustainable competitive advantage. They are assets without specific physical forms; such as intellectual property rights, trademarks, copyrights, technical know-how, brand name, reputation and so on. Core Competencies Prahalad & Hamel (1990) move away from the RBV and coined the term ‘Core Competencies’ to distinguish those capabilities fundamental to a firm’s performance and strategy. These are the organizational capabilities that are achieved through the effective deployment of a firm’s resources. Core competencies are distinctive and differentiating competencies that lie at the heart of an organization. This includes not just the products and services a company sells but also ‘soft’ areas of a company’s activities, such as branding, organizational innovation and service† (Hamel and Prahalad, 1994). Frà ©ry (2006) adds to this view and describes core competencies as the basic building blocks for a firm’s corporate strategy. Burberry have two key core competencies in Brand Name and Digital Innovation. Brand Name With a luxury fashion brand such as Burberry, brand name and reputation are extremely important. Burberry has gone through many ups and downs on the path of development and it has many competitors that include: Coach, Polo, Armani, Chanel and Gucci and so on. While Gucci focuses on luxury accessories, Coach concentrate mainly on the production of bags ( as does Chanel) and also produces accessories that range from watches and shoes to scarves and dog collars, and Chanel focus on bags. Armani’s and Polo’s marketing positioning is more focused on clothing. Burberry has succeeded in penetrating both the accessory and luxury goods. Moreover, Burberry’s resources include its high brand equity, its popular trench coat product and its signature check design. It is has a long history serving with the soldiers of World War I and it has been well received by the Royals; once by Queen Elizabeth II and once by Prince Charles. This means that customers now acknowledge them as the supplier of products to the royal family (Instyle, 2012). Referring to Burberry, customers immediately think of a luxury, high quality, and diverse fashion. However, in 1997, the new Burberry management knew that they could not rely on this benefit anymore. They realized that over the years, trends and customers change and become more diverse. From that issue, the new management believed that the problem with Burberry was undermined by a poor image and was now overly dependent on a narrow customer base comprising of middle aged, ‘fashion-conservative’ men (Fletcher, 2003). Their new strategy sought to change the position the brand of Burberry defined by ‘Britishness’, authentic outerwear heritage, historic icons, democratic luxury positioning, innovation and intuition (Burberry’s b annual report, 2011) which was aimed at the younger generation, while still retaining the traditional customer base. Recent advertisement of Burberry has brought all the characteristics of the England, â€Å"from a British landscape with aristocratic looking models to edger advertisement with models in bikinis.† (Jacobson), They also make their mark on pop culture by using iconic British representative, such as model Kate Moss and the up and coming actress Emma Watson. Their use of reputable fashion photographers is also to be noted. Considering these factors, Burberry is targeted towards different segments of the population with one common theme, luxury. With the advantage of the supplier of the royal, all of which attach a strong sense  of ‘Britishness’ with the Burberry’s brand. In November, 2011 Burberry was again included in Interbrand’s Top 100 Global Brands; was awarded the 2010 British Graduate 100 Award for ‘Where Fashion Graduates Want to Work’; and was recognized as the 13th most innovative company in the world by Fast Company magazine, as well as receiving the Inaugural Innovation Award at the 2010 British Fashion Awards (Burberry’s c annual report, 2011). This means, Burberry has a strong and sustainable competitive advantage that hard to beat. Digital Innovation Competition has always seen as a great source for innovation, while other brands focus on decors the boring store, Burberry opened up a new era of shopping by digital. Its business is driven by: Digital focus and integration (Burberry’s d annual report, 2011). In danger of being consigned to history a decade ago, Burberry has undergone a creative and digital revolution under the direction of chief creative officer Christopher Bailey, who joined the company in 2001. (Clark, 2012). The news follows the launch of the brand’s ‘Runway to Reality’ strategy, which allows VIP consumers to buy items from its runway collections immediately, via an iPad app. Also ‘Burberry Retail Theatre‘ was broadcast the brand’s Spring Summer 2011 women swear show live stream directly into 25 flagship stores worldwide, creating live simultaneous virtual trunk show events on 21 September 2010. Customers in store will explore the collection through iPads where they will be able to buy immediately through a custom-built Burberry app following a private viewing of the show on high definition screens spanning 3Ãâ€"3 meters. Burberry has been developing and testing over several months custom-designed, digitally charged in-store ‘Retail Theatre’ environments with enhanced acoustics and state of the art visual technology, creating the ultimate experience for modern luxury consumers. ‘Burberry Retail Theatre’ is at the heart of our retail growth strategy. This investment in cutting edge technology in partnership with Verizon enables us to more closely connect the Burberry brand with our consumers worldwide. This interactive retail investment will enable long term sustainable growth well beyond these  exciting global digital events.’ (Alexander, 2010) Moreover, the photo sharing website, which give consumers as well as fashion photographers a chance to try on iconic Burberry trench coat by online, allowing consumers to place immediate orders from the collection with a seven-week delivery. Burberry continued its digital democratisation of fashion with its Tweetwalk, partnering with Twitter to post backstage Twitpics of every look before they were sent down the runway, meaning the brand’s Twitter followers saw its runway looks in advance of fashonistas in the front row. During the Tweetwalk the brand’s Instagram account was taken over by Mike Kus, the most-followed Instagram user in the UK (Burberry’s e annual report, 2011). With digital innovation, Burberry has to prove to the fashion industry all over the world that the fashion industry needs to keep with the new shopping generation with lively images rather than images on the magazine and yet the luxury customers now very knowledgeable and they quickly make purchase decisions. Grab their attention in the digital boom trend is also the best way to Burberry became the first brand to appear in the consumer’s mind, rather than a different brand. Sustained Competitive Advantage Here have been many academics that have critiqued the Sustained Competitive Advantage over the years. According to Barney (1991) â€Å"to have sustained competitive advantage when it is implementing a value creating strategy not simultaneously being implemented by any current or potential competitors and when these other firms are unable to duplicate the benefits of this strategy†. Some other authors have suggested that a sustained competitive advantage is simply a competitive advantage that lasts a long period of calendar time (Jacobsen, 1988; Porter, 1985). In relation to Burberry, they have high negotiating powers with suppliers because they can offer unique products with the sophistication, elegance, a sense of pride to customers because they wearing what the Royal family do. Their resource is rare and it is this uniqueness that offers them value with regard to suppliers and customers. Their core competences allowed them to create the exceptional customer value assets that set it apart from its competitors. (Hamel and Prahalad, 1994). CONCLUSION It is important for every business to clearly understand how resources and capabilities affect firm performance. In fact, companies having sustainable competitive advance have been develop and exploit based on their internal resources and capabilities. This paper has illustrated how Burberry has maintained its competitive advantage in the face of exhaustive efforts from its competitors by using its resources and capabilities such as brand name and shopping through digital technology. In fashion industry, a usual strategy is brand name, and Burberry is no exception. This strategy aims to through more coordinated use of brand assets and greater integration of its global organization, Burberry has more opportunity to enhance consumer responsiveness and operate more efficiently and effectively. Furthermore, the company has also expanded its customer base with introduction a new aspect of the brand is defined by ‘Britishness’, authentic outerwear heritage, historic icons, democratic luxury positioning, innovation and intuition (Burberry’s f annual report). As brand name strategy is rather common among fashion, Burberry has attempted to bring in some differentiation to stay ahead. A breakthrough in the transition from conventional shopping to shopping combined with enjoys the overwhelmed digital features and sound. â€Å"Fashion is supposed to be about making things relevant. Yes, it is luxury. Yes, it is aspiration. Yes it is supposed to be inspiring. But I think there is nothing more inspiring than talking digitally because you can get attitude, you can get music, you can get sound, and you can get video and movement. You can actually articulate so much of your brand using this medium,† (Vogue Chanel, 2011). Innovation of digital technology has a breakthrough in the fashion industry in general and in particular luxury fashion and Burberry is leader. It also allows Burberry to create the exceptional customer value assets that set it apart from its competitors (Hamel and Prahalad, 1994). It has created brand awareness, as well as establishes and reinforces a luxury positioning of Burberry. REFERENCES Alexander, E. At the University of Oregon, Barbara Gorden-Lickey, Ph. D., sewed kittens eyes shut and forced them to jump from a height onto a platform surrounded by water so she could study the effects of sight deprivation on the brain. Cruel and inhumane experiments like this one is an excellent reason why people should recognize the importance of animal right activist groups such as PETA (People of the Ethical Treatment of Animals). Founded in 1980 by Ingrid E. Newkirk and Alex Pacheco, PETA is the largest group in the world with 600,000 plus members. Such abuse acts on animals are inhumane and absolutely unnecessary. With PETAs protection, animals can live freely without being subjected to researchers invasive and hostile terrorists like acts. Laboratory experiments are not the only place where unethical treatment of animals takes place. In the business of fur trading many animals are tormented and killed ruthlessly. In one of PETAs precedent-setting cases, a California furrier was charged with cruelty after a PETA investigator filmed him electrocuting chinchillas by clipping wires to the animals genitals. The American Veterinary Medical Association denounced the killing method saying, quot; it causes animals to experience a heart attack while fully conscious.quot; In another undercover expose, PETA videotaped a fur rancher injecting minks with weed killer causing them to have violent seizures and finallyShow MoreRelatedAnimal Rights And Human Rights923 Words   |  4 Pages Animal Rights â€Å"Nearly as many, 68 percent, were concerned or very concerned about the well-being of animals used in ‘sports’ or contests as well as animals in laboratories (67 percent) (Kretzer, 1).† Many people question whether an animal is capable of thought and emotions.
